It is believed in Kashmir Shaivism universe manifests via alphabets. Sanskrit language is build by vowels and consonants teaming up to be 53, 17 vowels and 36 consonants. That which connects the bridge between the un-manifested and the manifested world, is depicted by the dot on the crescent. Since it contains seed for both the possibilities, here in the painting these 53 crescents depict these 53 alphabets which each are portals of fullness of the creation and nothingness of the creation at the same time.
